Meteor scatter observations 12.08.2020 - 16.08.2020

And again Perseids, one of the most abundant meteor showers. The middle of August is a suitable time for meteor observations not only in optical part of the electromagnetic spectrum, but also on radio waves, which can be reflected by plasma of meteor trails and received on distances of a single E-hop, far away from transmitters.

General impressions: the signals were weaker than past year, thats why no stations identified by RDS information this time. Luckily, Czech, German, Austrian, Swedish and Hungarian national broadcasters have excellent audio archives which are a huge support in identification of the stations. Various playlists were also used for this purpose. Anyway, I'm satisfied with the results.

A recent theory of meteor trail plasma diffusion made the novel prediction that meteor trails diffuse much faster during daylight hours than at night. This occurs because the plasma density of the background ionosphere increases by up to a factor of 100 with sunrise. [Meteor Trails in the Ionosphere: Latest Results from Observations and Theory, M. M. Oppenheim, G. Suger, E. N. Bass, Y.  S. Dimant, Sigrid Close and Lars P. Dyrud]. Be that as it may, my loggings are too scanty to be an argument for some serious conclusions. However, I didn't find any dependency between time of the day and average duration of bursts for now.

By the way, here one can see signal of Svitle Radio Emmanuil pirate relay on 88.0 MHz, but that's a topic for one of the next posts.
