Reception of the Palestinian Broadcasting Corporation

Another interesting catch of the past year's sporadic E season: Palestinian Broadcasting Corporation. The signal of the Voice of Palestine was received together with other stations from Lebanon, Israel, Syria, Jordan, Iraq and Egypt. Broadcasting on the medium wave frequency of 675 kHz had been stopped at the beginning of 2000's, so this station is available on FM, satellites and online only at present.

Here is recording of the Voice of Palestine made on 90.7 MHz (transmitter in Ramallah, West Bank) in June 2021. Output power of the TX is unknown. Clear identification "Sawt Filastin" presents on the clip:

Reception of the former pirate FM station from France

Radio Dio, FM station from Saint-Étienne, France has very interesting format and history. Here what Wikipedia page (created by Chris Henniker as a translation of the French language version of Wikipedia entry and henceforth edited by other users) tells about this broadcaster:

"Radio Dio is an independent radio station, broadcasting to the French city of Saint-Étienne and its outskirts. Its slogan is "Free, Wild, and Impertinent". Its mission is to speak to 'have-nots' and to promote the local, national and international independent scene. In spite of its emphasis on rock'n'roll, Radio Dio broadcasts a great diversity of current musical styles, including reggae, electro, and some blues and metal. Its logo is a cat because in Radio Dio, the cat ate the rat.

Dio broadcasts on the Internet and on FM frequency 89.5 MHz, in Saint-Etienne and its near surroundings. Having previously been a pirate station, Radio Dio was officially created in 1981, as part of the liberalization of the FM band. The station has three paid employees. It takes part in the diffusion and the discovery of talents, and particularly buildings.

It remains one of the few French radios not to broadcast adverts. Radio Dio is a founding member of the Ferarock national collective (of which it has always formed a part); a member of the Office and the commission d'Ecoute. It is also member of the collective d'associations ligériennes, the Slug, which manages the SMAC, Salle of the Current music of St Etienne, the Wire, which was inaugurated at the end of January 2008."

Radio Dio has been received in Kyiv on 23rd of May 2021 from 09.07 till 09.12 UTC on the frequency of 89.5 MHz. RDS PI decoded: F857:

Evening reception of Radio 208 on MW in Kyiv

The powerful transmitter of Radio Riyadh in Ras al-Khair is off now, and it is possible to receive Radio 208 on 1440 kHz without significant co-channel QRM here. The signal is usually quite weak at local evenings, with rare fade-ins, when I can copy audio. I guess, the reception could even be much better at local mornings, however, unfortunately, I have no opportunity to check the frequency at morning time in some QRM-free place now.

Here is example of reception of the station on 1440 kHz on 24th of January 2022 at about 16.23 UTC during walk in park with my Degen DE-1103. One can hear Parisienne Walkways by Phil Lynott and Gary Moore:

Output power of the transmitter on 1440 kHz is 300 W, as stated on the eQSL received shortly. Many thanks to Stig Hartvig Nielsen!

Sad news from Germany

According to some messages on DX sites dedicated to free radio scene and social media, Armin Mothes, operator of Radio Gloria International has passed away.

I remember the shows of Radio Gloria International relayed via MV Baltic Radio and Radio 700 / Shortwaveservice till year 2018. These shows were always a source of free radio spirit for me, despite official status of the relay facilities in early 2010's. And I was always glad to hear nice oldies every 4th Sunday of the month. Thank you for the great musical broadcasts and rest in peace, Armin.

My condolences to relatives and friends.

Spanish-language station on 6931 kHz

Quite interesting radio station playing Spanish-language pop and rock music as well as some announcements or commercials (?) in Spanish has been received past night from 00.20 till 01.25 UTC on the frequency of 6931 kHz. The same broadcast was also audible on some of European SDRs with a good signal level at morning, till closing down at 11.15 UTC approximately. Unfortunately, modulation was distorted, but I copied the station's identification, which sounded like "Onda Radio" or something similar.

Here is recording of my direct reception on 28th of November 2021 on 6931 kHz at about 01.15 UTC:

Unidentified tests on 15190 kHz

Some unidentified station plays music non-stop on the frequency of 15190 kHz. It was observed yesterday at 10.00 - 12.00 UTC time slot. The music is also audible now at 12.45 - 13.30 UTC. SINPO in Kyiv is about 34433-44433. No any IDs were heard so far, but my guess is Channel 292 with tests of a new 19 mb transmitter (it's only my assumption!). Let's see.

Reception of Cupid Radio on 15074.6 kHz

It was great to to receive Cupid Radio on upper shortwave bands this morning again! The test transmission was targeted primarily to the listeners in Japan participating in DXpedition to the mountains in Niigata prefecture, however Cupid's signal has even been received in such a distant country as New Zealand, according to the post on HFU message board. The signal was quite good and stable here in Kyiv, without interference from other stations. Thanks for the transmission and also thanks to Paul UK DXer for the tip!

News of FM broadcasting in Kyiv

Relays of Svitle Radio Emmanuil have recently been reactivated on 88.0 MHz after several months of absence. Location of the transmitter is still unknown. Moreover, programs of another Ukrainian religious station Radio M now can be heard on the frequency of 89.4 MHz, also at evening and night time and also without RDS. Both transmissions seem to be pirate relays.

Radio M - 89.4 MHz - 22nd of September 2021 - 1952 UTC:

UPDATE: 11.10.2021 - the station on 89.4 MHz has recently been moved to 89.0 MHz and currently relays Ukrainian religious web-station JT Radio.

Current situation with broadcasting on principal MW channels in Afghanistan

Some changes in MW broadcasting of Afghanistan happened after Taliban captured this long-suffering country. I have checked principal medium wave channels of Afghanistan at 16.00-19.00 UTC recent days to estimate current situation with their activity (if you get an error at attempt to play some clip below, please reload the page or click the square with arrow icon to play the clip in a new window):

621 kHz - Tani-Khost - 200 kW:

20.08.2021 - VOA Deewa Radio seems to be still active on this frequency. Continuous comments and reports. Now the signal in Kyiv is not strong and very instable, with deep and continuous fade-outs. Usually, as the dark is setting in, heavy splatter from SRR Radio Timișoara on 630 kHz is becoming a challenge, however, the signal can reach a good level at favourable conditions on a proper season (ID is tentative!):

1107 kHz - Kabul/Pol-e Charkhi - 400 kW:

20.08.2021 - Voice of Sharia instead of RTA Radio Afghanistan. The format of broadcasts have changed drastically, it turned to the "medieval style": only speech, listener's phone-ins and Quran recitations before end of transmissions, no music anymore there. Very good and stable reception. The station is usually finishes transmission at ~18.30 UTC without any announcement:

1296 kHz - Kabul/Pol-e Charkhi - 400 kW:

20.08.2021 - VOA Radio Ashna is still on air with news and reports in Pashto. Closing down at ~17.30 UTC. Also strong signal, but not as stable as on 1107 kHz, it is starting to appear here first among the three mentioned stations. Slight interference from co-channel IRIB Sedaye Sistan va Baluchestan from Iran at times. Here is recording from 18th of August 2021:

Dutch pirate station Doppie FM received in Kyiv

Only two strong signals were audible during the start of the brief evening Es hop from the northern part of The Netherlands on 3rd of August 2021: NPO Radio 2 on 88.0 MHz from Hoogersmilde and another station on 90.1 MHz with RDS information absent in FMList database. That was Doppie FM pirate transmission with typical Dutch music:

I didn't even expect to receive a Dutch pirate on Tuesday evening with that weak an unstable propagation, on the stroke of Es season here!

Broadcasting in Sardinian language

This recording is rather interesting not by the fact of reception, but by its content: special programme in Sardinian language dedicated to the culture, history and modern life of Sardinia. It has been received on the Sardinian frequency of RAI Radio 1, at one of the time slots when regional insert of RAI Sardegna is on air.

Initially I thought, it is Portuguese when heard a weak signal on 91.3 MHz during today's sporadic propagation from that region (Virgin Radio on 90.3 MHz was much stronger at the same time), however the signal got stronger later, revealing interesting language, not heard by me before.

Sardinian language originates from dialects of Latin and is considered one of the most close to Latin among modern languages of Europe by some linguists. Isolation on the stage of formation and some archaic elements make it quite different from all other modern languages of the Romance group. However, some Byzantine Greek, Catalan, Spanish and Italian influence also exists due to rich history of the region. Sardinian has status of regional language of the European Union. The number of native speakes is ~ 1 - 1.35 millions. There are about 7 radio stations in Sardinia, except RAI Sardegna, which are preparing programmes in various dialects of Sardinian language for the listeners:
This amazing language is in use mainly among elderly residents of Sardinia nowadays, and its perspective is unclear, UNESCO assigned Definitely Endangered status to it, which means that children no longer learn the language as mother tongue in the home. So, it is especially great that some Italian radio stations are actively support Sardinian language by using it in own broadcasts.

Unfortunately, there are still many languages with lesser number of speakers which are not presented on radio waves at all, e. g. in russia, where politics of assimilation and silent genocide of national minorities is being realized for centuries, some of the languages are doomed to extinct before forthcoming collapse of russia and will never appear in broadcasts.

Here is my audio sample recorded on 2nd of August 2021 on 91.3 MHz (RAI Sardegna via transmitter in Santu Lussurgiu/Punta Badde Urbara) at 10.48 UTC:

Five Dutch FM pirates received in Kyiv for 15 minutes

New sporadic hop from The Netherlands and The United Kingdom on CCIR FM band on 3rd of July 2021 has brought new interesting catches, such as Radio Continu (new one for me, very similar to the Dutch amateur stations by its musical playlist). But the most interesting are the Dutch pirate radio transmitters which were highly active that Saturday evening.

The propagation was not very stable that day: fair signals with frequent fade-outs and rare fade-ins arrived mostly from the central and eastern part of The Netherlands alternating with numerous usual BBC Radio 2 and BBC Radio 3 giants on 88.1, 88.3, 88.6, 88.8, 89.1, 89.5, 89.7, 90.1, 90.5, 90.8, 91.3, 91.9 and 92.3 MHz. Also a couple of Dutch and Frisian stations from the northern part of the country were audible now and then (e.g. Grunn FM, Omrop Fryslân, etc.), but no any Belgian broadcaster was heard. In some cases, signals were available for only several minutes or even for tens of seconds. I have done SDR recording 15 minutes long without any hope for interesting results.

And here what I found after detailed analysis of my SDR recording:

1. Kampers Piraten Team (tent.) - 87.5 MHz - 16.40 - 16.44 UTC - SNR up to 25 dB - RDS PI: BE35, PS contained "VOOR REACTIES":

Nice retro repertoire, typical for the Dutch unlicensed broadcasters, unfortunately no identifications were heard during the short period of reception.

2. Sirocco en Lawaai Papagaai - 88.8 MHz - 16.28 - 16.43 UTC - SNR up to 26 dB - RDS PI: 884A, PS and radiotext contained: "Sirocco / Lawaai", etc.:

QRM from co-channel BBC Radio 2 at times. Quite active pirate station, already received here on 26th on June 2021.

3. Zuidwester - 90.1 MHz - 16.28 - 16.43 UTC - SNR up to 27 dB - RDS PI: 8FFF, PS contained "-- -t--d:"

Heavy interference from co-channel BBC Radio 2. Similar RDS settings can be found on this YouTube video clip by DX Hunter Z/W Drenthe. "-- -t--d:" appears to be "de tijd:"

4. M en M Formatie (tent.) - 91.6 MHz - 16.28 - 16.43 UTC - SNR up to 29 dB - no RDS was decoded:

Unfortunately, no RDS data was detecoded at all, as stated above, but operator's voice can be heard on my recording. Many thanks to Henri for the help with this one!

5. De Baltazar en Lady - 92.1 MHz - 16.35 - 16.41 UTC - SNR up to 29 dB - RDS PI: FFF6, radiotext: "Baltazarenladyalmelo. RADIOSTREA":

Dutch oldies and more contemporary music. Only a short burst, when the station's signal reached proper level, but that was enough to decode important ID information.

It would be possible to receive even more Dutch pirates on the frequencies above 92.3 MHz indeed, however it is more difficult in Kyiv, because that frequency range is densely populated by local official FM broadcasters. Anyway, it's worth a try one of the next times.

And again, many thanks to Henri, who helped me to identify some of the listed stations. I'm very happy with such a fruitful Es hop! More stations - more experience in identifying Dutch free FM'ers.

Three pirate FM stations were received in Ukraine during sporadic propagation from the Netherlands

The sporadic propagation on 26th of June 2021 at 16.00 - 17.00 UTC time slot has been quite fruitful in Kyiv: many stations from the Netherlands, Belgium and United Kingdom, but the most interesting are the pirate (unlicensed) broadcasters which were also active that moment, because Saturday evening is one of the most popular broadcast time among them.

Here what I was able to receive and identify with my Airspy Mini SDR and 80 mb inverted Vee dipole antenna (as you can see, some interesting Es catches are sometimes available even without special directional VHF antennas, such as "Yagis" or log-periodic ones, thanks to the high output power levels used by the Dutch FM pirates):

1. Goud Van Oud - 87.5 MHz - 16.18 - 16.30 UTC - RDS PI: 678F, PS contained: "GOUD / VAN OUD":

Unfortunately, I have not found any iformation about this station in Internet (https://radiogoudvanoud.nl/ is a different one, I guess), except for a WhatsApp number: 06 5555 5992.

2. Sirocco en Lawaai Papagaai - 88.8 MHz - 16.16 - 16.20 UTC - RDS PI: 884A, PS and radiotext contained "Sirocco / Lawaai / Papagaai":

Typical Dutch "pirate" music repertoire. This station was the most easy to identify, thanks to the informative RDS.

3. UNID (possibly Tik Van De Meule (T.V.D.M.)?) - 90.1 MHz - 16.14 - 16.18 UTC - RDS PI: 3276, PS contained: "VOOR / REACTIES" (tent.) phrase. On some YouTube clips, Tik Van De Meule has this phrase in its RDS PS, however, I don't know if it is a common phrase for many pirates or it is rather typical only for Tik Van De Meule. Also Tik Van De Meule was mentioned in pirate streams list for 90.1 MHz one of the next days:

Hungarian DXer EnJoe from Békés has also received the same station on 90.1 MHz that day, PS logged by him is: "GI??ERFM". Any ideas what it could be?

Any help with the third one or corrections are appreciated!

Since 14th of June 2021 Danish radio station World Music Radio is broadcasting on additional frequency of 11 meter band 25800 kHz. According to information from the station's owner, the transmitter is located in Mårslet (near Aarhus), running at 100 W and the ERP is around 250 W. Reception in Kyiv is quite regular on mornings and evenings. Here are sound clips recorded on 19th of June 2021 at ~16.30 UTC. Tentative propagation mode is Es.

Republic of San Marino received in Kyiv

Radio San Marino has been received here on 102.7 MHz on 25th of May 2021 during continuous sporadic hop from Central Italy and Croatia. The station was periodically audible from 07.30 till 08.10 UTC with pop music show by Gilberto Gattei. The recorded content was in parallel with their web stream, also clear identification "Radio San Marino...compilation..." by female voice was heard at 07.39, but I have started recording too late 😢

And repeated opening at 13.00 UTC: COVID-19, vaccines, about achievement of San Marinese Agata Alina Riccardi at the European Shooting Championships in Croatia (sports news):

"Agli Europei di tiro a segno in Croazia, la sammarinese Agata Alina Riccardi era impegnata nella carabina 10 metri, la tiratrice biancoazzurra ha concluso le qualificazioni con il punteggio di 616.7 con la 72' posizione finale su 92. Alla finale si qualificavano le prime otto. Il punteggio minino per entrare in finale è stato di 627.9"

Parallel to web stream, however again without ID:

Unidentified station has been received on 87.8 MHz during brief final hop from Belgium and The Netherlands, at 17.25 UTC. Detected RDS PI code is: 5396! This code is being used by Jonica Radio and some other Italians, however Jonica is not broadcasting on 87.8 MHz, and there are no stations with such PI on this frequency at all, according to the FMList database. I can't identify the recorded song neither, but it is not typical for Italian broadcasters, in my opinion. Possibly a pirate?

Signal of this UNID has faded-in synchronously with signals from Genk and Sint-Pieters-Leeuw (Belgium), also 100% NL (tentative) from Hulsberg was audible at the same time on 92.1 MHz. So, if this is a Dutch pirate, the most probable location of him is somwhere in Limburg!

Any help with identification is very appreciated.
