Ukrainian NDB news

NDB "ZK" of the Ihor Sikorsky Kyiv International Airport on 733 kHz has changed format of its identification in May-June 2019 to the following one:

IDx2 + 0.8" gap + 2.8" tone + 1.1" gap

Also one of the Ukrainian non-civil airports now has a new NDB on absolutely new frequency which has never been used before by this airport. The beacon is regularly active, but I can't give any concrete information on it, because our enemies in russia could use this data for their own purposes.

Es catches 13.08.2019

Very dense and continuous sporadic propagation: simultaneous hops from various parts of Italy, France and Spain initially, then stations from Switzerland and Southern Germany (Baden-Württemberg, Bayern) appeared too, finished with Belgium, Netherlands and Great Britain. That was quite difficult to locate transmitter sites of the Italian and French stations by this reason.

This Saturday, September 21, LRA 36 will make a special transmission from the Esperanza Base, Antarctica Argentina. From 10 to 1115 Argentine time (13 to 1415 UTC) by 15476 kHz 19 meter band.

Receipt reports should be sent to lra36(a.t)hotmail.com and, if correct, will be verified with a special electronic QSL.

The arrival of spring is a very good reason, as well as the proximity of the 40 years of the station that will be celebrated on October 20. The special broadcast will be in charge of the announcers of LRA36: Sabrina Alanis, Beatriz Costilla and Karina Muñoz while the technical operation is by José Calpanchay.

Hm... the time of the broadcast is quite unfavourable for reception in Europe, IMHO. LRA36 was audible good with even a pocket radio and telescopic whip antenna in years of maximum solar activity here, but I don't even know if I try this time.

WMR will leave shortwave frequencies

  In a completely unexpected move the Danish authorities (Energistyrelsen) has withdrawn the permission to use out of band short wave frequencies (on a non interference basis) for World Music Radio (WMR). This means that WMR is now ceasing operations on 5840 and 15805 kHz. WMR may return to shortwave – using frequencies inside the official short wave bands – but this may take several months.

Meanwhile WMR continues working on getting on the air on medium wave 927 kHz in Copenhagen.

Meteor scatter observations 13.08.2019 - 14.08.2019

SDR technique offers great capabilities in such a type of DXing as meteor scatter (MS) observations on VHF bands (OIRT/CCIR FM, HAM, AIR etc.). In contrast to other propagation modes (Es, Tropo), SDR equipment gives absolutely overwhelming advantage over conventional receivers by reason of pretty short characteristic time of MS events: rarely up to several minutes (bursts), but mostly up to several seconds (pings).

Good signal of BPC time signal station

I decided to start my Autumn DX season with VLF frequencies, because the end of August and beginning of September is a right time for reception of BPC Chinese utility station on 68.5 kHz.
 

The location of 90 kW BPC transmitter (Lintong/Pucheng) listed in most of frequency bases is incorrect. It’s really situated near Shangqiu (Henan Province, 34.457°N 115.837°E).

This time signal station is much more easy for reception than Japanese JJY here. And don’t look at S-meter on my screenshot, please. It is not calibrated.
