Perseids - 2021

Here are my results of meteor scatter observations on CCIR FM band made on 12.08.2021 - 15.08.2021 during Perseids meteor shower. Mostly powerful transmitters from Germany, Czech Republic, Poland and Denmark, as usual, plus one Italian station. Level of QRM has been increasing at my location from year to year, so all the stations were identified by playlists and podcasts only, no RDS information was decoded this time. The shortest distance is ~870 km (Ostrava/Hošťálkovice, CZE), the longest distance is ~1580 km (Holstebro/Mejrup, DNK), the lowest ERP is 10 kW (Radio PSR via Schöneck (Vogtland)), the highest ERP is 160 kW (NDR Kultur via Rostock-Toitenwinkel).

New clandestine broadcaster targeted to Afghanistan

 Regular relays of Afghanistan International TV (AITV) sound can now be received on the frequency of 7600 kHz. The 24/7 broadcasts were launched by Volant Media UK Ltd and targeted to the territory of Afghanistan captured by Taliban troops. 

AOKI frequency base gives Tashkent as TX location, however my tonight's TDoA results point to Gavar or Yerevan transmitter site in Armenia at 21.00 - 22.00 UTC (the station can also use different transmitters in other countries on this frequency at other time slots, though! Additional checks are required):

Current situation with broadcasting on principal MW channels in Afghanistan

 Some changes in MW broadcasting of Afghanistan happened after Taliban captured this long-suffering country. I have checked principal medium wave channels of Afghanistan at 16.00-19.00 UTC recent days to estimate current situation with their activity (if you get an error at attempt to play some clip below, please reload the page or click the square with arrow icon to play the clip in a new window):

621 kHz - Tani-Khost - 200 kW:

20.08.2021 - VOA Deewa Radio seems to be still active on this frequency. Continuous comments and reports. Now the signal in Kyiv is not strong and very instable, with deep and continuous fade-outs. Usually, as the dark is setting in, heavy splatter from SRR Radio Timișoara on 630 kHz is becoming a challenge, however, the signal can reach a good level at favourable conditions on a proper season (ID is tentative!):

1107 kHz - Kabul/Pol-e Charkhi - 400 kW:

20.08.2021 - Voice of Sharia instead of RTA Radio Afghanistan. The format of broadcasts have changed drastically, it turned to the "medieval style": only speech, listener's phone-ins and Quran recitations before end of transmissions, no music anymore there. Very good and stable reception. The station is usually finishes transmission at ~18.30 UTC without any announcement:

1296 kHz - Kabul/Pol-e Charkhi - 400 kW:

20.08.2021 - VOA Radio Ashna is still on air with news and reports in Pashto. Closing down at ~17.30 UTC. Also strong signal, but not as stable as on 1107 kHz, it is starting to appear here first among the three mentioned stations. Slight interference from co-channel IRIB Sedaye Sistan va Baluchestan from Iran at times. Here is recording from 18th of August 2021:

 Thanks to José Antonio García Merino for the detailed confirmation of reception of RNE Radio Clásica on the FM band frequency of 91.1 MHz during sporadic propagation! The distance between TX and RX is about 2310 km.

FRS on air August 29th

 On Sunday August 29th , the Free Radio Service Holland will take to the airwaves with a 4 hour evening broadcast.

On this occasion, programmes will commence at 17:52 UTC/ 19:52 CEST and close down will be just after midnight at 22:05 UTC/ 00:05 CET.  The current propagation pattern made us decide to start not earlier than 18:00 UTC/ 20:00 CEST. Programmes will be aired on 7700//4900 kHz as well as on 6185 kHz. Please note that the 4900 kHz frequency can be altered a bit up or downwards.

This broadcast is the unofficial celebration of our 41st Anniversary.  

Catch us on Sunday 29th August….the best in music, many interesting (radio) related items, listeners' names will be read out. It will be worth while to tune in! eQSL from the new Dutch SW station RockPower

 Just received non-detailed email confirmation of my yesterday's reception of the new Dutch SW radio station RockPower on 7220 kHz via new registered transmitter in Nijmegen (NIJ, in Gelderland, 51N51 005E50). The signal in Kyiv was very weak, with deep and continuous fade-outs, some fragments of music were audible now and then. Also the frequency is suffering from heavy splatter or being blocked by co-channel official broadcasters most of the transmission time here, so 7220 kHz is quite unsuitable QRG for reception in Ukraine at evening time, in my opinion. Thanks to Hans for the confirmation!

Dutch pirate station Doppie FM received in Kyiv

 Only two strong signals were audible during the start of the brief evening Es hop from the northern part of The Netherlands on 3rd of August 2021: NPO Radio 2 on 88.0 MHz from Hoogersmilde and another station on 90.1 MHz with RDS information absent in FMList database. That was Doppie FM pirate transmission with typical Dutch music:

I didn't even expect to receive a Dutch pirate on Tuesday evening with that weak an unstable propagation, on the stroke of Es season here!

Broadcasting in Sardinian language

 This recording is rather interesting not by the fact of reception, but by its content: special programme in Sardinian language dedicated to the culture, history and modern life of Sardinia. It has been received on the Sardinian frequency of RAI Radio 1, at one of the time slots when regional insert of RAI Sardegna is on air.

Initially I thought, it is Portuguese when heard a weak signal on 91.3 MHz during today's sporadic propagation from that region (Virgin Radio on 90.3 MHz was much stronger at the same time), however the signal got stronger later, revealing interesting language, not heard by me before.

Sardinian language originates from dialects of Latin and is considered one of the most close to Latin among modern languages of Europe by some linguists. Isolation on the stage of formation and some archaic elements make it quite different from all other modern languages of the Romance group. However, some Byzantine Greek, Catalan, Spanish and Italian influence also exists due to rich history of the region. Sardinian has status of regional language of the European Union. The number of native speakes is ~ 1 - 1.35 millions. There are about 7 radio stations in Sardinia, except RAI Sardegna, which are preparing programmes in various dialects of Sardinian language for the listeners:

• Radio Barbagia - 91.9, 92.0, 97.2, 103.0 MHz (Logudorese dialect)
• Radio Cuore Oristano - 97.0 MHz
• Radiolina - many frequencies (Campidanese dialect)
• Radio Sant'Elena - 103.8 MHz
• Radio Studio 2000 Vintage - 94.5 MHz (Campidanese dialect)
• Radio Super Sound - many frequencies (Campidanese dialect)
• Radio X - 96.8 MHz

This amazing language is in use mainly among elderly residents of Sardinia nowadays, and its perspective is unclear, UNESCO assigned Definitely Endangered status to it, which means that children no longer learn the language as mother tongue in the home. So, it is especially great that some Italian radio stations are actively support Sardinian language by using it in own broadcasts.

Unfortunately, there are still many languages with lesser number of speakers which are not presented on radio waves at all, e. g. in russia, where politics of assimilation and silent genocide of national minorities is being realized for centuries, some of the languages are doomed to extinct before forthcoming collapse of russia and will never appear in broadcasts.
